I wrote 50,000 words this month!

A few minutes ago, I validated my 2018 NaNoWriMo novel. It’s the first time I’ve written 50,000 words in 30 days since 2011, or 7 years ago. Coincidentally, my first-ever NaNo win came in 2008, so snagging a win this year feels especially apropos.

I ended the month with 50,313 words (by NaNoWriMo’s count). Of course, I didn’t make it to the end of my novel—I probably still have about 20,000 words to go (and I had about 25k already written on November 1st). But I’ll keep plugging away at it in December and hopefully finish this draft before the new year.

Still, it feels good to make so much progress on this project, which stalled around June, and which I’ve been having real trouble getting back into.

D.J. and I wrote together most evenings, and I know that helped propel me to success, especially when I really didn’t feel like writing. Having a writing buddy is a real thing that really works!

But the biggest bonus of this month? I think I’ve found a new writing routine that I can make work for me moving forward. I am so not a morning person, and I’ve been trying to force myself to write in the morning. This month, though, I found myself writing at night before bed, and that has been working much better than trying to force myself into productivity when I’m still groggy and annoyed that I had to leave my warm bed.

I’m going to try to stick with it moving forward, and we’ll see how well it shakes out when I don’t have the artificial deadline of NaNo looming over my head.

NaNoWriMo wouldn’t be NaNoWriMo without some stats, so here are some of mine from this month:

  • 50,313 official words written
  • 3 days with zero words logged
  • 3 days with 3k+ words logged
  • 14 days with 2k+ words logged
  • 11ty billion cups of tea drunk (approximate)
  • 4 shots of whiskey in my tea
  • 2 pounds of chocolate eaten (approximate)
  • 4 strained tendons
  • 23 uses of the word “fuck” (that seems low?)
  • 61 uses of the word “nodded” (way too much nodding in this novel)
  • 745 uses of my main character’s name (1.5% of all words!)
  • 823 adverbs (approximate—but still so much editing to do)

How much writing did you do this month? What other fun stats did you keep track of?
